Why We Built Kootto

Yves and Geoffrey, co-founders of Kootto

Geoffrey visiting Yves' home town in Brittany, North-West France — two French expats building something new on the other side of the world.

Kootto was founded by two French expats, Geoffrey, a software engineer, and Yves (Ian), a professional chef, who understood that Australia had world-class culinary talent but a frustrating lack of transparency around booking it. Adelaide, with its wine country roots and culture of exceptional produce, is exactly the kind of market Kootto was built for.

The Problem We Kept Seeing

Back home in France, booking a private chef was simple, browse menus, pick what you like, book, done. In Australia, clients faced endless back-and-forth emails, vague pricing, and menus that arrived days later. In a city that takes food and wine as seriously as Adelaide does, that experience felt out of step with everything else the culinary scene had to offer.

The Turning Point

When Geoffrey was laid off during COVID in 2020, he and Yves spent time analysing every private chef platform they could find, hidden pricing, no upfront menus, chefs buried in admin instead of cooking.
